How to Make Compelling Brand Videos (When You Aren’t a “Techie” Video Creator)

Share

You may not be aware, but creating brand videos could be a lucrative side business for you.

Imagine being hired as a freelancer to create explainer videos for corporate or individual brands! The good news is; you can get started without having to learn difficult video editing software.

Don’t misconstrue it. Learning video editing programs like Adobe Premiere Pro is great.

But, here, I’ll show you how to make brand videos without going through a steep learning curve.

According to the State of Marketing Video Report:

  • Video remains a key priority for marketers with usage and spend both, overall, increasing in 2021, and plans to increase again in the next 12 months.
  • The pandemic continues to impact video marketing plans — but the disruption appears to be reduced compared to last year, as people adjust to a ‘new normal.’
  • People are watching more video online than ever before – in fact the amount of online video they watch has almost doubled since 2018.

Sure, these facts are convincing enough and should help you understand why video creation will make a lucrative side business for you as an immigrant.

Awesome!

So, let’s proceed to how you can start creating short videos without being a techie video creator.

Step #1: Sign up on Canva

Canva is an online design tool for creating graphic designs like social media fliers, magazines, infographics, and videos. You can sign up for free on the website and start making different creatives.

With Canva, you can access already-made templates, so you don’t need to start from scratch.

As we go on in this tutorial, I will advise you to sign up immediately on Canva and start practicing some of the things discussed in this article.

Please note that I used the Canva web application throughout this article. Canva has a mobile app, but I’d recommend using a computer system for video editing on Canva.

Step #2: Choose a Video Template

Now, the next step is to search for video templates. Of course, you can start making your video from scratch, but video templates would be a good option if you’re a beginner.

So go ahead and click on the video; you can add video templates to the editor. Let’s see how this works.

So, you may add the four pages in the template you’ve chosen or add just one and then duplicate.

Step #3: Customize your video template

So, now you have chosen the video you’d like to use. The next step is customizing the template by adding your content — videos, text, icons, and photos.

Add and edit text

To add text to your video, click on the text box and replace it with your text.

You can also:

  • Change the font type
  • Change text color
  • Change text size
  • Change text effects;
  • And more

Add and edit photos and icons

If you want to add photos to your video, go to the left-hand side of the editor and select anyone you like.

You can select a photo from Canva’s photo library or go to upload and choose a photo from your computer. You can also download beautiful stock photo images from Splash or Pixabay.

You can edit photos on Canva by selecting or clicking on the picture and then going to edit images to see different options, including:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Saturation
  • Filters

You’ll be able to use the remove background feature only when you subscribe to the Canva premium plans. If you don’t want that, you can remove the image background at a remove.bg and then re-upload to Canva.

Kindly note that you can expand your uploaded image or photo to any size you like in the editor.

Then you can also animate your image just like you can do to your text.

To make use of icons, choose elements in the left-hand area of the editor.

Add videos

You can add videos to the videos you’re creating on Canva. You can get these free video clips from Canva or you can upload from your computer.

And that’s awesome! It simply means that the different pages of your video can have motion picture backgrounds and not just pictures.

Duplicate or add pages

You can duplicate a page or add new pages when working on a video. To add or copy pages, click on the three dots on any of the pages under the editor area.

Doing this will bring you to a pop-up with add page, duplicate page, and other features.

Adjust the duration of the pages

You don’t want your video to be too slow or too fast. So, you need to add timing to the different pages. You can do this on the tool bar above the editor.

Note that adding a video to a page will make the timing of that page longer, so you have to adjust to a suitable length of time.

Make use of transitions

To make your video flow smoothly from one page to another, you have the choice of selecting different transitions for your pages.

To choose a transition type, put your cursor on one of the pages beneath the editor and click on the three dots.

A list of features would pop up, and you can select a transition.

Enhance with animations

From typewriter animation to pop and stomp, Canva text animations can make your video captivating.

All you need to do is select the text you want to animate and click on the animation tab. You can also animate a page as well as images on Canva.

Add a background music

Now, you need to add background music to give your video an alluring feel.

Take your cursor to the left-hand side, and then click on audio.

You will discover different audio sounds which you can add to your video. The audio indicator will appear under the editor.

Furthermore, if you click on the colorful background music indicator, you can adjust the fade in and fade out for the audio.

The fade-in fade-out feature is essential so that your background music doesn’t just start or end abruptly with the video.

Step #4: Play your video on Canva or download to your device.

After you’ve taken all the other steps, like adding videos, pictures, or icons and adjusting page durations, your video is almost set.

Some templates in Canva allow you to play the video directly on the application, while you may have to download it to see your video in other templates.
